And what a beautiful day it's been! The birds are chirping, the loons are calling, and the squirrels are chattering. This Saturday is opening fishing weekend for pike and the weather forcast is 70s and sunny! We headed down to the beach today to do some raking (the water is still chilly) and saw a flock of about 30 pelicans swimming by the sand bar across the resort bay. Now is the perfect time to see birds migrating through. Just a few others we've noticed are the Canadian geese, wood ducks and a bunch of bluejays that hung around our feeders for a few days. <br /><br />*Soon to come.... another preview of the new lakehome available for vacation rentals starting this summer! I guess the old saying "time flies when you're having fun" really is true! Spring has been here for quite a few weeks which means there's all sorts of things to do at the resort both for work and fun! Yesterday we spotted a wood duck, grouse and three deer walking through the meadow by Ranch House and neighbors in the area have been spotting otters on the lakes as well. It's a great spot for summer or fall picnics with benches and campfire pits scattered near the river. The river edges are sandy and the last time we visited there was a deer relaxing right by the water. Two sets of stairs get visitors down the steepest incline and then small paths wind around near the base of the river. At this time of year we slipped and slided around in the mucky clay which was an adventure itself! We woke up to about 2 inches on the ground the next morning and some VERY cold weather. There are still vacationers driving through the area for the fall color tour and some were lucky enough to see both the changing leaves and snow on the ground. There are a few different options for hikers (we chose the backwoods trails). <br /><br />The Jingo Lake Road will be the site for the Bigfork Valley Challenge on September 12th. There is something for everyone with a 3 mile run/walk, 4.5 mi race, and a half marathon. What a great way to view the beautiful northwoods this fall and take on a fun challenge! Lakeview is situated high along the shoreline, is nicely wooded, and very private. This unique cabin is one of the originals at Jack-The-Horse Resort with dark wood floors, an open beam ceiling, and charming antique-style windows. Guests enjoy great additions as well: a queen size bed, full kitchen, and easy access to the lake with a private dock and a small swimming beach. This cabin is semi-modern since guests use an outhouse a few steps from the cabin and a nice shower/dressing room at the resort (both are used only by Lakeview guests). Back in the late 1800's the area was mistakenly mapped as being underwater which meant it was never logged! According to the MN Department of Natural Resources, it is actually 144 acres with white pine over 300 years old. This hike is worth doing each year since the scenery is impressive with a bog overlook, stream, and huge trees everywhere. The trail is well-marked with information markers and there is an outhouse and parking lot at the trailhead. The Lost 40 is about a thirty minute drive from Jack-The-Horse Resort. It has five large bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a jacuzzi, sundeck, screen porch, and a grand fireplace constructed by a local mason. Windows have been well positioned to take in spectacular views of the lake and surrounding forest, some even present a birds-eye view. At the resort, our H2O has always come from a well which in this area of Minnesota means the water also contains a high iron content. With this new system, cabin water is now both filtered and softened. So those of you who bring bottled water for drinking can take it off the "things to bring to the lake" list.
